Virgin and Child
Factual Information:
From: Auvergne, France
Period: Second half of twelfth century
Period: Second half of twelfth century
General Information:
This particular artwork was brought about by the demand for small scale relics for the placement on altars for veneration by believers. In the artwork Christ sits in Mary's lap while holding a bible, both are distinctly emotionless, and stare strait ahead. Made out of painted wood, this was likely owned by a small church along pilgrimage roads towards more important pieces of spiritual artwork, in their attempt in bringing their own pilgrims.
Why This Artwork?
This artwork was chosen because of the movements that it represents. More specifically the movement for small scale relics for placement in small scale churches for pilgrims on the pilgrimage road. Also, while representations of Christ and anything that could be considered a idol were still rare, we can see that they are becoming less rare as time goes on. This shows a major transition in the thinking of the church, an important look into their time.
