This was the first pyramid to have been built. It was designed as a tomb of Djoser, who was the first or second king of the 3rd Dynasty of the Egyptian Old Kingdom. Around the Pyramid is a Necropolis, or a city of the dead, where there were many buildings that have been constructed at around the same time.
Why This Artwork?
This artwork was chosen because it was the first pyramid to have been made by the Egyptian people. It also sparks the need to outdo this pyramid, with even larger pyramids of greater size, which leads to more pyramids built in later pyramids. Also, this was one of the earliest works credited with an author, called Imhotep. These all make it an important work of art that marks the beginning of building truly massive structure out of stone.
