Factual Information:
From: Sea off Cape Artemision, Greece
Period: 460-450 BCE
Period: 460-450 BCE
General Information:
Diskobolus or Discus Thrower, is one of the most famous Greek statues. The original Greek bronze statue is lost, thought there have been numerous roman copies of the statue. The discus thrower is shown to be in the middle of the stasis before starting his throwing of the discus. It shows many muscles in tension, ready to spring to action. The statue has often been said to have been a pose to be unnatural to a human, and also that it has very little emotion shown in the discus thrower's face.
Why This Artwork?
This artwork was chosen to show a form of transition from extreme realism from before this period the making of this statue, to the extreme exaggeration of the Hellenistic portion of Greek historic art. Also this statue shows us one of the sports played by the people, that is, throwing disc like objects like a Frisbee.
