Factual Information:
From: House Xeste 3 (Thera), Geece
Period: 1630 BCE
Period: 1630 BCE
General information:
This artwork was found in a residence of the ancient Minoan people. The evidence found there indicates that it was a painting showing the initiation rites of young women. In the painting we see a young girl in the what was evidenced to be traditional Minoan dress, picking crocus flowers. These flowers were used for paint and seasoning, but were also used at the time ot alleviate menstrual cramps, this could indicate a use in the women initiation rites. Compared to most subject matter shown before, this gives a sense of free flowing art, absent from earlier art, such as the art of the Egyptians.
Why This Artwork?
I chose this artwork because of the amount of information is provides in such a simple manner. It can easily be seen what kind of dress was worn by the people of the time, as well as the rituals that were evidenced by the founders. This is very important to understanding this people.
