Period: 1480-1490
General Information:
One of the most important things to note about this period is the introduction of affordable prints. These artworks were easy to reproduce thanks to the introduction of many tools that allowed it to be done very quickly, with little cost and time investment to the printer. This allowed more access to art to the masses, something that was impossible before. Art prints like this one were affordable, and first began to be used often during the northern renaissance.
The prints allowed for extreme detail, like in this painting of Saint Anothony being tugged and tormented by demons. Each of the demons has a uniquely imagined unearthly appearance that gives room for artistic expression that the artist, Martin Schongauer, took full liberty to use. With extreme skill he was able to show the demons forms and textures, giving a lively feel to them. He showed the tormented Saint Anthony with an expression of pure, long suffering pain.

Why This Artwork?
This artwork was chosen to show the new forms of artwork, such as the prints, which allowed the masses access to their own artwork. This is a big deviation from earlier periods when only the rich were capable of access to artwork like this one.
