Mantiklos Apollo, Archaic
Factual Information:
From: Thebes, Greece
Period: 700-680 BCE
Period: 700-680 BCE
General Information:
This was one of the first examples of sculptures in Ancient Greece. It can be seen that even at this period they had believed in their gods, such as Apollo. This can be seen from the writing inscribed on his legs. From this period, the sculptures lacked many of the features present in later works of art that were around, the figures are very stiff, and lacked any real form of facial expression. However, it can be discerned that they are interested in reproducing the normal features of human anatomy. This is discerned from the fact that his body contours in a way similar to the way it should, but not quite they way it is normally.
Why This Artwork?
This artwork was chosen because of its importance to determining how the ancient people were attempting to do art, and their attempts at making human form. This artwork shows that they were attempting to attain sculptures with a realistic human form, but that they don't know how yet. This allows us to ascertain how much they progress throughout their civilizations lifetime.
