PMA - Positive Mental Attitude
This time was much like earlier times, only to a higher extent, which is why the theme for this time, is PMA positive mental attitude still. The high renaissance is just a continuation of the early Italian renaissance, so PMA will still help with the remembrance of this.
Historical Context
The high renaissance is during a frame or period in which there is a massive continuation of previous motions set in place. People are questioning their daily values and beliefs, major change is occurring and science is picking up. Exploration and exposure to different regions of the world is giving people the opportunity to trade and get rich, as well as explore other regions of the world and see their beliefs as well.
This time is a time of major religious crisis. Scientific progress is picking up thanks to the work of many people, especially Leonardo da Vinci and people are questioning their religion. Corruption is beginning to show inside the catholic church, people are beginning to become more secular. It was during this art historical period that major reformations alter the map and religion of Europe permanently.
The Renaissance by the 15th century had been fully adapted and accepted by the ruling classes. In the early portion of the Renaissance, the initiators of the renaissance movement were seen as craftsmen without recognition. Now however, these craftsmen had become full blown thinkers, who often had much influence and prestige and could charge great fees for their work on commissions. However, these developments had little impact on the peasants who in Italy were mostly just farmers and sharecroppers. Life had changed little for the average peasant from the middle ages. Inequality ran high during the latter part of the Renaissance. The average high class person controlled as much as one-hundred times the wealth that one of his servants or a farmer might. This characterizes the renaissance as a form of cultural or ideological development, but not of a great social or economic change.
Art during this period of the renaissance was mostly of religious art, however it included much of the Roman and Greek myths as well. These myths became the primary form of art that was considered more secular, compared to the commissions of the church which dwarfed all other art of these periods. The art becomes more emotional, and once again, artists add to the innovations of art with new theories on how to more perfect their art. The High Renaissance was traditionally seen as a explosion of creative genius by many artists.
Around 1520, a new art movement began, Mannerism. This new art movement focuses on artificial traits of portraits, rather than the naturalistic ones from early periods. Proportions are skewed, the composition has extreme tension, rather than the balance of earlier Italian works. Mannerism is noted for its intellectual sophistication. It is very extreme, and it does not have the harmonious qualities of High Renaissance art, but rather it is very high in tension and there are many breaks compared to the flowing style of High Renaissance art.
