Historical Context
The Early Middle Ages was the period of European history lasting between 5th century to 10 century, following the fall of the Western Roman Empire. This period was often called the Dark Ages due to the low amount of cultural output and the decline in both urbanization and population. The fall of the Roman Empire unleashed political chaos and caused a cultural blackout throughout Western Europe. Many tribes kept in check by the Roman Empire now battled openly. They often fought for land and lost land while fighting for it. It was during the middle ages that the many tribes migrated to Western Europe fleeing from their native lands ravaged by war.
The artwork of the period of was often small, easy to carry, and influenced by animals. This was because of the amount of animals they lived with, and the admiration of these animals. The artwork was small because it had to be carried easily because anything that could not be carried was often lost because of the amount the tribes needed to move, because an attack from another tribe could come at almost any time.
