Christ as the Good Shepherd
From: Ravenna, Italy
This mosaic is of Christ as a shepherd among a flock of sheep. Instead of later however he is seen clothed in golden robes with a large golden staff, and a halo. This change may present a change in how they wished for Christ to be represented to the people who are going to see it. They wanted people to see Christ like a king, not a humble person like before. All other representation of Christ before this where he was shown as a good shepherd are no where near as regal as this one.
Why This Artwork?
This artwork was chosen to show a difference in how Christ was represented in this artwork and in the previous ones. This may constitute a major change in Christianity from the earlier artworks to this one. This makes it an important artwork for discovering how exactly it changed, and studying this change.
