Three Angels
Factual Information:
From: Tretyakov, Moscow
Period: 1411 or 1425-27
Period: 1411 or 1425-27
General Information:
This Byzantine style icon was made by a Russian painter, Andrei Rublev. This unchanging Byzantine art style stuck around for so long, that the Russians had a popular icon creator for it, long after the collapse of the Byzantine Empire. In the artwork, there are three figures around the cup in the middle. Each of the figures is suggested to be an angel, by the halo around each of them. You can tell the difference between normal Byzantine era artworks and Russian style works that look Byzantine by the firm lines, strong patterns, and intense contrasting colors.
Why This Artwork?
This artwork was chosen to articulate just how unchanging the Byzantine art is. This work of art was completed many years after the other more popular Byzantine works, and the figures and style are practically the same as before. This shows something ingrained into their culture or art tastes that just doesn't change.
